-audre lorde, Poetry is Not a Luxury
Please join us Saturday May 17th, after the beautiful Malcolm X jazz Festival, for a night to honor ancestors, resistance and revolution. Art, like struggle, is an expression of the people. Our movement. Pieces of spirit and consciousness created to inspire each other. It is our shield. It is preservation. It is our stories weaving together into our collective story, because art must be for the peoples sake. Art that can fight. When we struggle we walk in the steps of our ancestors. When we create we keep their spirits alive. And when we share together we move towards liberation. This event will be a few days after my birthday so would be extra special to gather folks around that time. I will be preparing carribean style rice and peas and coconut lentils, but this is a potluck so please feel empowered to bring some nourishment to share. There will be a community altar set up for folks to bring offerings to honor ancestors. There will be funky diasporic jamz played to be felt in the body. And an open mic where all expression is encouraged (poetry, music, jokes, rants, spells, and other magical creations). The open mic will start around8:30. There will also be art on display through out the Qilombo space. I want to honor the brilliant work homies create; If you have pieces you would like to share up on the walls holla at me. And if you are feeling inspired (which you will be) there will be an area set up with some art supplies for you to create if the spirit catches you.
The intent of this gathering is to bring folk together in a positive and radical way so that we can vibe together, eat together, create together, laugh and love together so that we may get free together.
This space is for dreamers and warriors of all ages.
