Fort Lauderdale Police Enforce “Sharing Ban”

Over the weekend, Fort Lauderdale police, while enforcing the anti-homeless ordinances, prevented “Love Thy Neighbor” from sharing food outside Stranahan Park.

90-year-old founder of Love Thy Neighbor Arnold Abbot, Irene Smith of Love Thy Neighbor, Rev. Canon Mark Sims of St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church, and Rev. Dwayne Black of the Sanctuary Church, were issued a summons. Violations of the “Sharing Ban” can carry a penalty of $500, including jail time of up to 60 days.

Activists are asking supporters nationwide to participate in their online campaign:

With the passing of a new “sharing ban” regulation, the City of Fort Lauderdale has fulfilled its regime of “Homeless Hate Laws” along with new restrictions of going to the bathroom in public, panhandling, storage on public property, and camping. It joins 21 other cities that have created laws to restrict food sharings in the last 2 years.

As part of the #resisthomelesshatelaws week of action beginning 10.31 we are calling on the internet to assist! We need everyone to make phone calls, send e-mails, tweets, and anything else to the powers responsible for this stupidity on Monday to let them know this won’t stand.

It is possible, but not for certain, the food sharers will be ticketed or arrested over the preceding weekend. We want to let Fort Lauderdale know even considering such a thing is unacceptable!

@franka525 (Chief of Police Frank Adderly, ask him to not enforce homeless hate laws!)

Please ask any and all of these city officials et al. to drop support of the sharing ban and other laws that criminalize homelessness including the camping ban, panhandling restrictions, storage on public property, as well as police brutality against the homeless.
