[Refugee Support] Info: Are You Interested In Volunteering in the “Jungle” of Calais – Read This!

This report was written on Sunday September 13th and could be outdated at any given moment. Everything evolves so quickly here that by next week the situation might be completely different.

Dear people,

In spite of all the good intentions of so many, I would like to give a few last minute pointers. I’ve been here for a week now to volunteer and I’m helping out where help is needed. (I am here as an individual, unconnected to any organization so it is easier to write unprejudiced. On the other hand, this is merely a personal impression, although formed after having lots of conversations with the organizations here and people on the field.)

Material

If you have goods available, try to stock these at your own place or at friends for now. Currently all storage here is full and organizations are looking for more space but it is unlikely that they are going to find more space this week and probably not even in the first few weeks. To be sure of storage place, contact Salam, L’Auberge des Migrants or Secours Catholique (these are the organizations that usually have space. If they say they don’t have any space left, they don’t, so there is no point in coming with stuff anyways)

The Ohlauer crisis: a watershed moment for asylum policy in Germany?

On 24 June 2014, Kreuzberg – a vibrant, multicultural neighbourhood of Berlin – was virtually turned into a police state overnight.

Local government and police mishandling of the situation in Ohlauer Strasse almost brought the situation to near fatal disaster.

Up to 1,720 officers, some in full riot gear and armed with machine guns, were deployed in an area no bigger than a few blocks.

They were there to remove 40 refugees who were staging a roof-top protest against their imminent eviction from an abandoned school building on Ohlauer Strasse.

Hundreds, at times thousands, of demonstrators came out to support the political demands of the refugees.

The siege lasted for eight days, during which time freedom of movement – even for members of parliament and journalists – was completely restricted.

FIRSTLY– Friday July4 was a really important day and a strong convergence of indigenous, undocumented and anti – colonialist anti- fascist action on #farceofjuly against the reactionary racists holding down Murrieta. The Danzas called upon a strong spirit to hold that space and i think that is what moved a lot of the rightwingers down the road (though they were worried the bus would come in from the other direction). 

It’s important we got out there and got more information on what the conspiracy is between the police, border patrol and the anti immigrant protesters (as if they are any different). After going down the street to take pictures of the right wing reactionaries, a right winger punched someone who was with us. The police intervened and began to use excessive force on the people targeted by the right-wing. As we tried to leave the area, more police arrived and began brutalizing our group instead of holding accountable the right wingers (big surprise here..). We were assaulted by police, then charged with assault and Lynching. One comrade was arrested and charged with a felony, even though they were far from the conflict but were filming the brutality and excessive force of the police. His phone was confiscated. It appears we will be facing multiple felonies, if anyone in the So Cal areas knows of any legal support help or suggestions please email me at artofexisting@gmail.com.

Fight the Palestinian Leaders

Mohammad, 83 years old, lives in al-Azzeh camp, the smallest in the West Bank and where the unemployment rate is high. “I cannot explain my feelings with one sentence,” he says. “Those who have no country have no dignity. I have no dignity. I always think of the past. Life was better then. We had our land. Now if you don’t work, you don’t eat. I feel angry. I was a fighter against the British and the Zionists. If I had the strength to fight, I will fight the Palestinian leaders.

Paq wrote:

 

“With the conviction that the right of return is not a side issue but is at the core of the so-called conflict, this series depicts a Palestinian refugee child with a grandparent, a first-generation refugee. Through it i hope to emphasize not only the duration of the plight of the Palestinian refugees, but also to visualize the extraordinary bond and solidarity that Palestinian refugees share across generations, preserving their dignity and determination during the long wait and fight for justice.”

 

For me, this 83 year old man’s words resonated loudly. I don’t believe anything else needs to be said, other than that Hajj Mohammad is still feeling angry, is not pacified, calls a spade a spade, and is not the typical stuck-in-the-rosy-past geezer.

[Video] Spain: 492 immigrants jump the fence in North African enclave Melilla

“Melilla registered its largest number of immigrants entering since 2005 on Tuesday, when 492 people from the Sub-Saharan region jumped over the double fence shortly after 08:00 local time (07:00 GMT).

Many of them sustained injuries. Between 50-100 people have cuts of varying degrees, so that the Red Cross had to set up a field hospital. The Spanish authorities used rubber bullets, but stress that nobody was injured by them.

A shocking set of photographs reveals the injuries inflicted on asylum seekers detained at Manus Island.

Asylum seekers have allowed photos to be taken for evidence. Some pose with ID, allowing their injuries to to be recorded. Others stand beside an image of Reza Barati above the words “We Never Forget”, taped to a wall.

The photos, include images of bullet holes in walls, blood stained walls and pillows, and asylum seekers sleeping in an open-air pavilion.

Some asylum seekers show gashes and stitches, with multiple head injuries. Many of them have bruised eyes and faces.
